An exhibition of photographs immortalizing daily life in the Land of Israel at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The photos are part of the permanent exhibition of the historical Jewish Museum in Amsterdam and are on display in Israel for the first time. The photos depict life in Israel a hundred years ago, but sometimes appear to be documenting the Bible period, particularly craftsmen in traditional crafts, most of which have disappeared over the years.
The photos were taken by members of the photography department of the American colony that established itself in Jerusalem in preparation for the 1898 visit of German Kaiser Wilhelm Israeli. The black-and-white photos were colored by hand by photography department staff, in order to attract buyers. The exhibition also includes picture postcards with photographs identical to those in the exhibition, and which were sold as souvenirs and sent all over the world.
